The mission
of art is to bring out the unfamiliar from the most familiar.
I am a
self-taught Bhajan (hymn) writer and painter. God has been kind enough
to grant recognition by gifting me with the skill of writing and
painting. In these pursuits I forget who I am. I am completely
immersed in my work and at such moments feel closest to God. Art is
the only twilight zone in my life. After my husband’s death, “Warli
paintings” became a part of my life. At my age of 70 today, I have
realized that art can give me that magic divine touch and experience
to move nearer to God.
I have tried
to put before you the “Gramin Kala” (Village Arts) of Warli people,
who have made Warli Arts, a living style. Warli folks try to discover
their pleasure and reflect their sorrow through these art forms. They
forget their poverty and sorrow as they sing and dance. Warli art is
the art of the people living in hilly areas and jungles about 50
kilometers away from Mumbai.
It was
difficult to come across a book on the subject at a moderate price
which could become a guideline for the art lovers. I published one
book by name “Sakshatkar” in 2002. Through this book I have tried to
present reflection of emotional and sentimental values of Warli
tribes, keeping their original painting styles intact. |
